Thursday, July 03, 2008 UPDATE
Dear Friends,
Thanks again for your prayers for Jonathan! He’s getting better and is now
able to talk (it was such a JOY to hear him on the phone!) and eat a bit,
as the tube from his throat was removed yesterday and the hose for feeding
was removed today through his nose; the IV was also stopped and Jonathan
can take medicine by mouth now. Although they’re still waiting for the
results of the pathology tests to determine what exactly caused the
abscess, some results have some through and showed that the growth wasn’t
cancerous or caused by TB – praise the Lord! The doctors say Jonathan may
be discharged from the hospital as early as in the beginning of the next
week. I’ll paste excerpts from Jonathan’s parents’ update (below) for more
information on his situation.
Daniel and I are doing amazingly well, especially now that Jonathan is
recovering :) I can tell, however, that Daniel is missing his Daddy. Our
friends are still trying to get a visa for me to go out to HK, but
there’s a chance that Jonathan and his parents may be able to return soon,
so we won’t have to go out. Please pray for Jonathan’s complete recovery.
Thank you again for all your prayers and thoughts! Not only is God healing
and providing for Jonathan, but we here are also encouraged and it feels
like I’ve gained many new friends in the last few days :) May the Lord
bless you richly!
Vera

It is Thursday morning July 3rd in HK and it has been a roller
coaster ride of emotions this week related to Jonathan's recent illness.
Gratefully, he is going to be okay, though still in recovery. The full
story is, he almost died last Saturday of suffocation brought on by the
abscess on the right side of his throat...not certain what caused that.
In the words of the surgeon who operated on him, Dr. Chan Yu Wai, "Urgent
CT scan showed right parapharyngeal collection with airway compromise.
After discussion with him (Jonathan) with respect to the potential risk of
acute airway obstruction (total suffocation), emergency operation with
transcervical drainage of the collection and tracheostomy for airway
protection was performed under general anaesthesia on the same day of
admission." We were told it was so urgent that Jonathan bumped 75 other
people in line for his emergency surgery which was done on the Saturday -
a day when surgeries are not normally done. As you can imagine, we are so
very grateful to the medical staff here at Queen Mary Hospital in Hong
Kong for their excellent care of Jonathan […]
When we first saw Jonathan on Monday he was sitting in a wheel chair by
himself waiting for a tube to be inserted through his nose for feeding.
The original tube had a problem and so he was not receiving proper
nutrition. He looked like an old man in that chair, very pale. Walking
up behind him we called his name, when Jonathan turned to look at us tears
came to each of our eyes. We got on our knees and held his hands. Because
of the tracheostomy, Jonathan could not speak and so asked for a pen and
wrote these words on a piece of paper, "thank you for coming". It was a
very moving moment .and there have been many of them these past few days
[…]
Please continue to pray for Jonathan's complete restoration of strength.
He is still in hospital. The tracheostomy was removed yesterday and
hopefully the feeding tube through the nose may come out today. His
colour has returned and with that a bit of his humour...although he really
misses Vera & Daniel. As mentioned above, thank you to each one for your
prayer and encouragement during this difficult time. We cherish you!
Love, Paul & Gloria
